Hydroponics requires more equipment, such as pumps, timers, and reservoirs, to deliver the solution to the plants. Hydroponics also requires more monitoring and testing of the pH and electrical conductivity of the solution. Hydroponics mainly applies to vegetable gardening.

Hydroculture is simpler and more accessible than hydroponics, as it does not require any special equipment or skills. Hydroculture can be done with any type of container plant pot, such as pots, trays, or baskets – as long as they are waterproof. Hydroculture plant pots don’t need for any drainage holes at the bottom. Hydroculture can be done indoors, as long as the selected plants receive the light and temperature they need. Hydroculture mainly applies to indoor plant design.

However, hydroculture also has some challenges or drawbacks, such as the need for regular fertilization, and the difficulty of transplanting. Hydroculture requires frequent fertilization, as the medium does not provide any nutrients to the plants. Hydroculture can also make transplanting difficult, as the medium can be hard to remove from the roots without damaging them. But further down we will discuss why this isn’t an disadvantage as such.

Why Choose Hydroculture for Bonsai Plants?

Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in containers, by pruning and shaping them to create a desired form. Bonsai originated in China and Japan, where it has been practiced for centuries. Bonsai can be made from many different species of trees and shrubs, but some of the most popular ones are Ficus microcarpa (also known as Chinese banyan or ginseng ficus), juniper, pine, maple, azalea, and jade.

Bonsai plants are usually grown in soil-based media, such as peat moss, bark, or sand. However, soil-based media have some disadvantages for bonsai plants, such as:

  • They can become compacted and acidic over time, reducing the air and water flow to the roots.
  • They can harbor pests and diseases that can harm the plants.
  • They can cause root rot if overwatered or underdrained.
  • They can leach nutrients from the plants if not fertilized regularly.

Ficus microcarpa is one of our favorite species for hydroculture, as it has many attractive features, such as:

  • It is easy to care for and adaptable to different light and temperature conditions.

We chose Ficus microcarpa for our project, as it is suitable for the lobby of the business center: being close to a large window front, where it can tolerate low humidity and high salinity. Ficus microcarpa is also popular and in demand among our clients, who appreciate its beauty and elegance. Ficus microcarpa is also symbolic and valuable in Asian culture, where it represents longevity, prosperity, and wisdom.

How We Delivered and Maintained Hydroculture Bonsai Plants for a Business Center Lobby

We delivered 8 impressive Ficus microcarpa bonsai plants in hydroculture to the lobby of JLT ONE TOWER five years ago. We used clay pebbles as our medium for hydroculture, as they are lightweight, porous, and pH-neutral. We also added some water-soluble fertilizer to the water to provide the necessary nutrients for the plants. We used CUBICO pots as our containers, as they are elegant and fit perfectly with a modern interior design and are furthermore durable and very suitable for hydroculture.

The plants were placed in front of a large window, where they received plenty of indirect sunlight and air circulation, which are ideal for Ficus microcarpa. The plants transformed the lobby, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for the visitors and employees.

We were amazed by the results of our project. The plants thrived in hydroculture, showing healthy and vigorous growth. The leaves became more glossy and green, the fruits became more abundant and colorful, and the roots became more exposed and attractive.

The plants also added a touch of nature and beauty to the lobby, enhancing the aesthetic and environmental quality of the space. The plants also performed better than soil-based plants, using less water, resisting pests and diseases, and preventing root rot.

5 years later ….

We visited the business center five years later, and we were impressed by how well the plants have maintained their health and beauty. The plants looked even better than the day we delivered them, showing no signs of stress or disease. The staff at the business center told us that they were very happy with the plants and that they received many compliments from their guests and clients.

One of the reasons why the plants have lasted so long and looked so good is because of the easy and low-cost maintenance done by the clients themselves. Hydroculture is very simple to maintain, as it only requires watering every few weeks, depending on the water level indicator in the pots. The water level indicator shows when the water is at its optimum level, when it needs to be refilled, or when it is too full. The average watering schedule for hydroculture is around every four weeks at the optimum level, but it can also be six to eight weeks at the maximum level. This means that hydroculture saves a lot of water compared to soil-based plants, which need to be watered more frequently.

Another reason why the plants have stayed healthy and beautiful is because of their resistance to pests and diseases. Hydroculture does not contain any organic matter that can attract or harbor pests or pathogens, unlike soil-based media. This means that hydroculture reduces the risk of infestation or infection that can harm or kill the plants. Hydroculture also prevents root rot, which is a common problem for soil-based bonsai plants. Root rot occurs when the roots are overwatered or underdrained, causing them to decay and die. Hydroculture provides optimal water and oxygen to the roots, preventing them from rotting or suffocating.

At home or at work, everybody was attracted to this easy plant system. Nowadays hydroculture plants are most common in commercial projects, such as offices, hotels, shopping malls and especially hospitals, where hygiene is of great importance.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT HYDROCULTURE?

When looking at a hydroculture plant the first things you will notice is that

  1. there is no soil
  2. the plants are in a material called expanded clay or else known as LECA or LECATON
  3. each plant has a water indicator.

WHAT IS LECA?

LECA is expanded clay that has been burned 1200 C and keeps the plant in place. But it has benefits that makes it stand out next to a soil plant: due to the baking it is free of bacteria, it will never decompose or decay, so it never ever needs to be replaced. A hydroculture plant can stay with the same LECA for 30 years.

LECATON is rough on the outside and sponge-like in its inner texture. Being rough allows the water poured in to reach the plant root at the bottom of the plant pot – exactly where the water is required. Having the sponge effect helps it to store water to a certain degree, so that when the water level is back to the MINIMUM level, the plant roots can still get water which is stored inside the LECA.

WHAT IS THE WATER INDICATOR?

Water is a hydroculture plant’s nutriment. So it is important to know when and how much ‘nutriment’ your plants needs. The water indicator helps you with that. It tells you exactly when you should be watering the plant and how much water you should be giving to the plant. How much easier can it get?

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATER A HYDROCULTURE PLANT?

The water indicator has there levels:

  1. Minimum – time to water the plant
  2. Optimum  – 3 to 4 weeks
  3. Maximum – 6 to 8 weeks

You typically water each plant to the OPTIMUM LEVEL and it takes about 3-4 weeks (!) for the water to reach the minimum level again. That means no watering of the plant for 3-4 weeks! And that also means that you are free of constantly having to check the soil – if it is wet, humid or already dry- and to set up by yourself for each plant separately a watering schedule. The water indicator simply takes over and leaves you to just enjoy the plant.

The MAXIMUM LEVEL is called often the ‘vacation level’, because it leaves you with 8 weeks (!) of not needing to water the plant. But on a regular basis it isn’t something we as experts in this field since 1980 like to support, since it will lead to over watering of the hydroculture plant.

Being typically used to checking up regularly on a soil plant, this is usually the most new and fascinating for someone when having a hydroculture plant for the first time. And it might need some time to get used to. But with all the hectic life we are leading now, having one thing less to worry about and instead simply enjoy – is alone worth it to get a hydroculture plant.

And the constant over- and under watering is one of the main reasons soil plants often die. On the other hand a hydroculture plant can grow up to 20 years, maybe even more. Which is pretty amazing when you truly think about it.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING NO SOIL?

  • As seedling the hydroculture plant is directly planted into LECA. So from from the very start the roots are free of any typical bacteria. That helps with the survival and longevity of a plant.
  • Soil typically attracts insects, which makes it ‘un-hygienic’ plants and not recommendable to be used in especially hospitals or restaurants (close to the kitchen area), where cleanliness is of great importance. Designers are often faced with this issue and sometimes fall back on artificial plants or more often than not simply exclude plants from their designs concepts. And that is actually counter productive. It has been proven in numerous studies that plants help in the healing of patients. Humans need nature. Just think how much time – when you can  – you spend outdoors. Walking in the park or woods at the weekends is very common in the western hemisphere. In this region, these outdoor activities are being encouraged with the building of many parks and green outdoor public areas as possible. Being in nature soothes us, makes us smile, makes us happy!

But we spend most of our time indoors and a large portion of that at a workplace. Companies often don’t add plants, because they look at the initial purchase costs and the following maintenance costs. But there are plenty of scientific studies showing how simply adding plants in the office space boosts productivity and job satisfaction. And these hidden savings are considerable for company owners to take note and see that investing in plants at the workplace is a wise idea.

Improve Air Quality

We work in a A/C and computerized run world and it isn’t healthy. Studies show the indoor air is even more polluted than outdoor air. Typical air pollutants at a workplace are asbestos, mould, radon, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Further we have computers, laptops, mobiles and other electronics around us, emitting radiation of different degree. All these effect our health, causing for example headaches, dry eyes, dry throat or fatigue.

Plants oxygenate the air. Research show that plants work as a filtering system – especially when you have hydroculture plants. Generally the toxins & radiations get absorbed by the leaves and plant roots. Since a hydroculture plant system is purely water based, without any soil, the toxins get sent through a second filter system: water. There is a common saying: one computer, one hydroculture plant.

Additionally a hydroculture plant works as a humidifier: cleaning up the dry A/C filtered air and releasing moisturized air. Each hydroculture plant takes approx. 5 liter of water. Only 1/3 is used by the plant, 2/3 are released into the surrounding, actively changing the quality of the air around you and reducing the need for A/C even.

So which plant do you select?

The answer is simply: any! And as many as you want.
